Sick or injured animals
If you find an animal that is sick or injured either take it to the Rotorua SPCA at 24 Old Taupo Road or your local vet or call the Rotorua SPCA immediately on 07 349 2955.
When handling an injured animal be careful as they may bite or scratch when in pain. Use a blanket or towels to wrap the animal up so it can’t bite or scratch you. A blanket will also help keep the animal warm (which is important to prevent the animal from going into shock).
Place small animals in a box (a cat box is ideal) for transportation to the SPCA or vet. The box will prevent the animal from harming itself further or running away.
Some animals will need extra warmth so you can fill a plastic bottle with warm water and place under a towel next to the animal.
Do not feed the animal as if it needs an operation food may interfere with any drugs the vet might need to give the animal.
Call the Rotorua SPCA on 07 349 2955 or your local vet immediately for help and advice.
Lost Animals
It’s never pleasant when a beloved pet goes missing; however there are things you can do to help ensure your pets safe return:
- Ask your neighbours if they have seen your animal and to check their sheds or garages
- For lost dogs, contact your local pound (found in the phone book under Council)
- Contact the Rotorua SPCA on 07 349 2955
- Contact your local vets and let them know your pet is missing
- Print out a circular with a photo of your pet and your contact details, as well as the time and place last seen. Distribute it to local vets, dairies, the pound, animal shelters and the houses in your local neighbourhood. Here is a pre-prepared one, which you can print out and use:
