Fostering our Animals

Fostering

If you have ever felt you would like to make a real difference to animal’s lives, consider fostering!

Each year more and more animals are born. With limited space at the shelter, we need fosterers to open their homes and hearts to help us save more lives. Every fosterer makes a huge difference to the lives of these animals.

Fostering kittens and cats:

Can I foster kittens if I have a full-time job?
It depends on the flexibility of your job and your schedule. Most of our foster parents do work full-time, but are able to spend time with their foster kittens before and after work. They are also able to accommodate their schedule if a kitten is seriously ill and needs to be seen by our vet right away.

How much time do I need to spend with the kittens?
As much time as you possibly can. The more time you spend with your foster animals, the more you will help with their socialisation. You’ll also be able to spot signs that your kittens are not feeling well, which in kittens this young could be critical. Besides, it’s a lot of fun to play with your kittens!

How many kittens will I be fostering?
At least two kittens go out at a time so they can teach each other kitty manners. In special circumstances, a kitten may be fostered alone but this is usually for a behaviourial reason or due to injury.

How long do kittens need to be in foster care?
Kittens need to be fostered until they reach 1kg in weight and can be desexed. Foster kittens must remain indoors at all times.

Can I let kittens play with my resident pets?
NO. Please keep your foster kittens separate from your resident pets. Not only could your pets introduce diseases to the foster kittens, but the kittens could also introduce diseases to your pets.

As a fosterer, you will need to provide:

  • A safe, warm, secure room for the foster      kittens to be housed in
  • Litter tray(s)
  • Food and water bowls
  • Love and attention
  • Time

While the Rotorua SPCA will provide food, we often run very low during the peak of kitten season. If you can assist us by helping to supply food, we would be grateful.

A caring fosterer can really turn a kitten’s life around for the better. If you would like to foster a cat or kitten, simple  email adoption@rotoruaspca.org.nz or call 07 349 2955
